William James characterized pragmatism as a new term for old methods of thinking in 1907 with his lectures "Pragmatism: A New Name for Some Old Ways of Thinking." He began by identifying what he called 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'--a fundamental and seemingly intractable conflict between two different ways of thinking: the hard-headed empiricist belief in the experience of things and going through the facts, versus the more gentle-minded preference for a priori-based principles that appeal to rationalization. He said that pragmatism could bridge this gap.
He defined 'praxy as a concept or truth that is rooted not in a idealized theory, but in the present world. He argued that the pragmatic approach was the most natural and true method of solving human problems. Other philosophical theories according to him, were flawed.
During the 1900s, other philosophers developed pragmatist ideas such as George Herbert Mead, W.E.B Du Bois, and Alain Locke. They developed pragmatic views about the structure of science, education, and public policy. John Dewey articulated pragmatist views in areas such as education, democracy, and public policy.
Currently, pragmatism is still in the process of influencing the design of curriculums, educational programs and other applications of science and technology. There are also a variety of pragmatic philosophical movements like neopragmatism and classical pragmatism and other. There are also formal and computational pragmatics, game theory, theoretical, clinical, experimental and neuropragmatics, as well as intercultural and interlinguistic pragmatics among others.

Origins
The term pragmatic was first coined in the United States around 1870. It became popular among American philosophers and the general public due to its close connection to modern social and natural sciences. William James (1842 to 1910) is believed to be the first person to using the term"pragmatic" in print. In his book 'The Present Dilemma in Philosophy' which was published in 1907, he outlined a fundamental distinction in the field of philosophy. A key figure amongst the classical pragmatists was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). He also contributed significantly to aesthetics, law, and the philosophy of religion. In the latter part of his life, he came to regard pragmatism as the philosophy of democracy.
